-1 Sora – AI

You have probably already heard of Sora, OpenAI’s newest text-to-video engine. Sora has taken the world by storm over the last couple of months. What at first glance seems to be a segment of a film about a spaceman, upon closer inspection you start to see anomalies. No one expected AI to have already advanced that far in such a short time. A good indication of the progress AI has made over only a year is a viral video that was made a year ago with AI. In the AI-generated video you could see Will Smith eating spaghetti. The difference in realism between this viral video and the new Sora engine is massive. This much progression in only one year tells us that a future with more and more AI is closer than we first might have thought.

-2 Testing face

At the time of writing this blog Sora is still in its testing phase. Only a handful of people do currently have access to Sora. This is because OpenAI is taking various precautions for safety. For context, one of these safety precautions that OpenAI are taking is working with experts in areas like misinformation, hateful content, and bias.

-3 Concerns

Despite the safety precautions OpenAI are taking with Sora there are still a lot of concerns around Sora. What if AI-generated content becomes so realistic that you can’t tell the difference anymore between real and fake? What kind of impact can this have on for example legal cases? When it comes to all of the potential risks that come with this new technology, this is only the tip of the iceberg.

-4 My take on Sora

Yes, there are a lot of risks surrounding Sora, but despite these risks I think if done right, Sora can bring a lot of positive things too. Sora can for example greatly cut the costs of a production. Making larger scale productions available for a wider range of people.

On the end of the day, I think the new technology that comes with Sora can have a positive impact on film making. I am excited to see how this technology will evolve over time and how it will be used in the next generation of film making.
